This World Water Day, we’re recognizing the critical role that healthy watersheds, wetlands, and aquatic habitats play in sustaining fish, wildlife, and communities across British Columbia. From restoring wetlands to improving fish passage and protecting critical habitats, HCTF-funded projects are making a real difference for the ecosystems that depend on clean, abundant water. Every project funded is a step toward a more resilient future for BC’s fish, wildlife, and people.

Hello, spring! 🌸 As the days grow longer and temperatures rise, wetlands across BC come alive. Frogs begin calling, birds return to nest, and plants burst into bloom, marking the start of one of nature’s busiest seasons. Spring reminds us of renewal, resilience, and the importance of protecting the habitats that make this transformation possible. At HCTF, we’re proud to support conservation projects that help wetlands and wildlife thrive not just this season, but year-round. Here’s to fresh starts, new growth, and a hopeful season ahead.

Wetlands are bird hotspots bursting with life, sound, and movement. From the elegant great blue heron to the energetic red-winged blackbird, BC’s wetlands provide food, shelter, and breeding habitat for countless bird species. During migration, wetlands become essential rest stops for waterfowl and shorebirds travelling thousands of kilometres. In spring and summer, they’re busy nesting and feeding grounds for resident birds raising their young. Protecting wetlands means protecting the birds that depend on them and ensuring future generations can experience the wonder of these wild spaces. Which wetland bird is your favourite?

Scholarship Highlight: Shannon Werden! Shannon is one of the 2025 Al Martin Scholarship Recipients Shannon is a master’s student conducting their research at Thompson River University. Her research seeks to address critical knowledge gaps in the reproduction and habitat use by fishers in the Interior Douglas-fir biogeoclimatic zone. To fill this knowledge gap, Shannon will be tracking adult female fishers using radiotelemetry. Additionally, she will be assessing habitat quality to determine the drivers of reproductive output. By linking reproductive success to habitat characteristics, this research will help identify mechanisms limiting population growth and inform science-based forest management strategies. Interested in applying for the AL Martin Scholarship? Applications are now open! Head to https://hctf.ca/scholarship-program/ to learn more and apply!

Tall, patient, and instantly recognizable, the great blue heron is one of British Columbia’s most iconic wetland residents. These striking birds rely on healthy marshes, estuaries, and shorelines where shallow water makes it easier to hunt fish, amphibians, and invertebrates. In BC, many heron populations depend on protected nesting colonies and undisturbed feeding areas, especially near urban and coastal regions where habitat loss is an ongoing challenge. By conserving wetlands, we’re protecting the places herons need to hunt, nest, and raise their young, and ensuring future generations can spot that familiar silhouette standing motionless at the water’s edge.
