‘Tis the season for the Christmas Bird Count, and Bird Studies Canada is hosting an event especially designed for young birders.

The Ladner Christmas Bird Count for Kids will take place this Saturday at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta, BC. Full detail are available here. Not in Delta? Visit Bird Studies Canada’s website to see if there’s another Christmas Bird Count event happening near you!

Few animals represent BC’s wild landscapes quite like the moose. Despite their size, moose are deeply connected to wetlands, relying on marshes, swamps, and shallow lakes for food, shelter, and relief from summer heat. Aquatic plants found in wetlands make up a major part of a moose’s diet, and these areas also provide important calving habitat and protection from predators. When wetlands are degraded or lost, moose populations feel the impact. Protecting wetlands means protecting the places moose need to survive and thrive. Through conservation funding and partnerships, HCTF helps support the habitats that sustain iconic species like the moose across British Columbia.

For Undergrads we've got the Don McCubbing Scholarship and for Grad students we have the Al Martin HCTF Scholarship! HCTF– McCubbing Scholarships - these scholarships for any BC students who are pursuing an honours thesis or direct studies research project in their fourth year of a BSc. program at any BC post-secondary institution. From the elegant great blue heron to the energetic red-winged blackbird, BC’s wetlands provide food, shelter, and breeding habitat for countless bird species. During migration, wetlands become essential rest stops for waterfowl and shorebirds travelling thousands of kilometres. Scholarship Highlight: Shannon Werden! Shannon is one of the 2025 Al Martin Scholarship Recipients Shannon is a master’s student conducting their research at Thompson River University. Her research seeks to address critical knowledge gaps in the reproduction and habitat use by fishers in the Interior Douglas-fir biogeoclimatic zone. To fill this knowledge gap, Shannon will be tracking adult female fishers using radiotelemetry. Additionally, she will be assessing habitat quality to determine the drivers of reproductive output. By linking reproductive success to habitat characteristics, this research will help identify mechanisms limiting population growth and inform science-based forest management strategies.
