HCTF Recognized at Ducks Unlimited 75th Anniversary Event

HCTF partner Ducks Unlimited Canada is celebrating 75 years of working to conserve critical wetlands. On March 9th, Ducks hosted a Diamond Signature Event in honour of its anniversary, and presented HCTF with a beautiful pair of hand-carved decoys in recognition of the Foundation’s contribution to their work.

Board member Dr. Ken Ashley accepted the accolade on behalf of HCTF. “The conservation successes achieved through the partnership of our two organizations exemplify the outstanding results that can be achieved through wildlife resource users investing in habitat,” said Dr. Ashley. ”Through DUC’s continued dedication to the protection and enhancement of wetlands, HCTF has found a long-term, valuable partner in conservation, and we hope to continue that relationship to the benefit of wetlands for many years to come.”

Since 1981, Ducks and HCTF have collaborated on dozens of wetland preservation and enhancement projects throughout BC. From Delkatla Slough on the Queen Charlotte Islands to Boundary Lake in the Peace Region, to the Codd Island wetland in the Lower Mainland and the Hoodoo property in the East Kootenays, you can find the results of joint DUC/HCTF investments in virtually every part of the province. Both organizations were among the founding members of both the Pacific Estuary Conservation Program and the BC Trust for Public Lands. Together, we continue to be leaders in on-the ground wetlands conservation through the Wetland Partnership Program. Over the past ten years, HCTF has contributed approximately $2.5 M to this program, funding wetland acquisitions, stewardship projects and site restoration activities.

Thank You!

This weekend, HCTF said farewell to three of its board members, whose appointments are coming to a close at the beginning of April. Andrew Wilson, Dave Hatler and Anna Fontana all received a framed wildlife photo by Jared Hobbs in appreciation of their contribution to the Foundation.

Both Anna and Dave had been members of the HCTF Board since 2000, an incredible 13 years of volunteering their knowledge and expertise to benefit HCTF’s conservation work. Andrew was a more recent addition to the Board, but his contribution as HCTF’s long-standing chair of the Fisheries Technical Review Committee has been invaluable. Our sincere thanks to all three of these individuals, and best of luck in all your future pursuits!

Dates to Remember

Thank you to everyone who submitted a proposal for 2012-13 projects by the November 2, 2012 deadline. We received a total of 188 proposals. Over the next three months the proposals will go through a technical review and an HCTF Board review. Final funding decisions will be made by the Board in early March – check back here at that time to see a preliminary list of approved projects.

If you wish to submit an enhancement proposal, your next opportunity will be November 2, 2013. The one exception is the Burrard Inlet Restoration Pilot Program: the second intake proposal deadline for this program is June 30th, 2013. Further information on the application process will be posted on our website in the spring, or contact us for further details.
