Scholarship Highlight: Melissa Butynski Melissa is one of 2025's Together for Wildlife Scholarship recipients! Melissa is a Doctorate candidate attending the University of British Columbia. Her research is examining two key issues. The first is organizing a wildlife crossing and corridors forum to bring together various stakeholder groups to align on management strategies, braiding together Traditional Knowledge and Western science. The second focus is using camera traps to determine factors that influence the use of wildlife crossings The Together for Wildlife scholarship is awarded annually by HCTF in partnership with the First Nations-B.C. Wildlife & Habitat Conservation Forum and the Province of British Columbia’s Together for Wildlife Strategy (T4W) to 10 masters and Ph.D. candidates conducting research that will have a positive impact on stewardship, management, policy, or decision-making of wildlife in BC.

Bringing nature into classrooms and classrooms into nature. HCTF Education’s Exchange Box and Wild Schools programs help students all across BC connect with the natural world through hands on, place based learning. Through the Environmental Exchange Box Program, K–9 classes team up with partner schools around the province to explore their local ecosystems, uncover what makes their region unique, and then swap their discoveries in a class to class exchange. It’s a fun way for students to learn about BC’s incredible biodiversity and see their home through new eyes. The Wild School program takes things even further. This free, multi year initiative supports K–8 schools in weaving environmental learning into everyday teaching, giving students more time outside, more curiosity fuelled exploration, and more opportunities to connect with BC’s biodiversity in meaningful ways. Together, these programs spark wonder, build confidence, and nurture lifelong connections to nature. When students learn in and from the outdoors, they grow into the knowledgeable, empathetic stewards who will care for BC’s wild places for generations. This program provides critical funding to land trust organizations in British Columbia to secure properties that protect vital fish and wildlife habitats. Scholarship Highlight: Johanna Griggs Johanna is one of 2025's Together for Wildlife Scholarship Recipients Johanna is a master’s student at the University of Victoria. Johanna is investigating the impacts of industrial logging in the Heiltsuk Territory. By using detection data from remote camera Johanna and Heiltsuk land managers seek to understand how industrial logging could be impacting spatiotemporal interactions between wolves and their prey. This work may minimize future impacts of logging on wildlife in the Heiltsuk Territory. The Together for Wildlife scholarship is awarded annually by HCTF in partnership with the First Nations-B.C. Wildlife & Habitat Conservation Forum and the Province of British Columbia’s Together for Wildlife Strategy (T4W) to 10 masters and Ph.D. candidates conducting research that will have a positive impact on stewardship, management, policy, or decision-making of wildlife in BC.

Capacity Grants provide funding to build and strengthen the capability and capacity of organizations to design and deliver conservation or restoration projects successfully. The grant provides funds to support and develop strategies and abilities to initiate actions that benefit fish, wildlife, and habitat conservation aligned with the objectives of the HCTF.
