When the sun goes down, bats get to work! These incredible mammals play an important role in BC’s ecosystems, helping keep insect populations in check and supporting healthy habitats. BC is home to 15 bat species, each with unique characteristics and habitat needs. From forests and wetlands to caves and old buildings, bats rely on a variety of places to roost, raise their young, and find food. But bats face challenges, including habitat loss, disturbance of roosting sites, and the impacts of white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease that has devastated bat populations in parts of North America. Protecting bat habitat helps these nocturnal neighbours continue doing what they do best. Whether it’s preserving mature trees, protecting important roosting sites, or learning more about the bats in your area, every action makes a difference. Want to help BC’s bats thrive? Learn more about bat conservation and discover how you can support these fascinating creatures! #HCTF #BatConservation #BCWildlife #WildlifeConservation #Biodiversity

Scholarship Highlight: Daphnee Tuzlak! Daphnee is one of 2026’s Together for Wildlife scholarship Recipients Daphnee is a PhD student at Simon Fraser University. Her research assesses the extent to which long-term (millennial-scale) Indigenous land use practices have influenced terrestrial and freshwater systems. Daphnee’s work aims to support Gitxsan Wilps ‘Wii K’aax in their restoration and management plans for an Indigenous Protected Area. The Together for Wildlife scholarship is awarded annually by HCTF in partnership with the First Nations-B.C. Wildlife & Habitat Conservation Forum and the Province of British Columbia’s Together for Wildlife Strategy (T4W) to masters and Ph.D. candidates conducting research that will have a positive impact on stewardship, management, policy, or decision-making of wildlife in BC. Turning Ideas Into Action: 2026 Northern Restoration Community of Practice Workshop How can we turn shared knowledge and restoration goals into practical action on the ground? On October 20–23, restoration practitioners will gather in Terrace, BC, for the 2026 Northern Restoration Community of Practice Workshop. Building on the vision, values, and indicators co-created by the Community of Practice in 2024 and 2025, this year’s workshop will focus on practical tools, shared learning, and stronger partnerships to advance restoration across Northern BC. Participants will have opportunities to: - Share restoration projects spanning coastal, estuary, riverscape, and ungulate habitats. - Work through real-world challenges and solutions with peers. - Develop practical guidance products and explore tools to support restoration work. - Identify knowledge gaps and priorities for future collaboration. - Strengthen connections across Northern BC’s restoration community. Hosted at the Terrace Sportsplex, the workshop is an opportunity to build on collective experience, learn from one another, and turn shared ideas into meaningful action. 📅 October 20–23, 2026 📍 Terrace Sportsplex, Terrace, BC Learn more about the Northern Restoration Community of Practice and its work to support restoration across the region. https://sernbc.ca/ecosystem-restoration-community-of-practice/conferences #HCTF #HabitatRestoration #NorthernBC #Conservation #Collaboration

Scholarship Highlight: Peter Baker! Peter is one of 2026’s Together for Wildlife scholarship Recipients Peter Baker is a PhD student at the University of British Columbia Okanagan under the supervision of Dr. Adam Ford. His research combines his interests in movement ecology and animal physiology to explore how wildfire risk reduction treatments influence the habitat, behavior, and energy expenditure of mule deer in central British Columbia. This work will help provide the evidence base needed to ensure fuel management strategies support healthy mule deer populations. INVASION OF THE BULLFROGS! Coming to a pond near you… 👀 They’re big. They’re loud. And they’re not from around here. American bullfrogs are an introduced species in British Columbia, and they can cause major problems for native amphibians and other wildlife. Bullfrogs are voracious predators that compete with native species for food and habitat, and their enormous appetites don’t stop at insects. While they might look like something straight out of a monster movie, the real story is about protecting BC’s native ecosystems. Understanding where bullfrogs occur and how they interact with native species is an important part of managing their impacts. So if you hear a deep “BWAAAAAAAH” coming from a pond this fall… you might want to investigate. 👀 #BCWildlife #Bullfrog #InvasiveSpecies #BCNature #HalloweenNature
